Typhoon season in Okinawa: what happens to your boat tour?

Know the cancellation rules and the money rules before you book — then the typhoon season isn't scary at all.

The short answer: most days in typhoon season are great ocean days

"What if a typhoon hits during our Okinawa trip?" — it's the most common worry we hear in summer. Here's the honest truth: even in typhoon season, far more days are calm than stormy. What really matters is knowing exactly what cancels a tour, and what happens to your money — before you book.

This page publishes the real operating criteria of KingsSeaRoad, a private boat tour operator based on Hamahiga Island, Uruma — no fine print, no surprises.

When is typhoon season in Okinawa?

Typhoons can approach Okinawa roughly from June to October, most often in August and September. But "typhoon season" doesn't mean constant storms — between typhoons, you get the clearest, calmest water of the entire year. Summer is still the best season for snorkeling in Okinawa.

Typhoon paths become predictable a few days ahead. So the smart move isn't avoiding summer — it's choosing an operator whose rules you know, with the flexibility to decide late.

Our cancellation criteria — published in full

ConditionDecision
Rain onlyTour runs. Rain barely changes the fun underwater
Waves over 1.5m / winds over 10m/sUnder review — the captain decides from actual sea conditions
High-wave warning issuedCancelled — with no cancellation fee

The decision is made by a captain who runs this sea every day. One rule has no exceptions: when in doubt, we choose safety.

If we cancel, what happens to your money?

When the cancellation is our decision (typhoon, rough seas), you pay nothing. No cancellation fee, no fine print. If your travel schedule allows, we're happy to discuss moving your tour to another day.

If you cancel for your own reasons, the standard fees apply: 50% from 7 to 3 days before, 100% within 2 days. Unsure because of a forecast? Contact us early — we'll tell you honestly what the sea looks like.

Why the east coast helps

We depart from Hamahiga Island on Okinawa's calm east coast, inside the waters sheltered by the Kaichu-doro sea road. Apart from actual typhoon days, this area makes it easier to find calm spots even when the wind picks up — one of the reasons we run our tours here.

3 smart moves for travelers

1. Put the ocean early in your itinerary. If a tour is cancelled, spare days later in the trip let you rebook.

2. Use same-day booking. We accept same-day and last-minute bookings when slots are open — so you can wait for the forecast, then decide.

3. When unsure, just ask. The evening before or even the morning of — our captain knows this sea better than any weather app.

Watch the sky, then decide.

KingsSeaRoad runs 100% private boat tours — one group only, same-day booking OK, English support available. Most popular: the 3-hour plan (¥15,800/person, free photo & video data).

Typhoon & weather FAQ

Q. What happens if a typhoon hits on my tour date?

Safety comes first — we cancel the tour. When the cancellation is our decision, you pay no cancellation fee at all. If your schedule allows, we're happy to discuss moving your booking to another day.

Q. Who decides whether the tour runs, and how?

Our captain decides based on actual sea conditions. The criteria are clear: we review the tour when waves exceed 1.5m or winds exceed 10m/s, and we cancel whenever a high-wave warning is issued.

Q. Does rain alone cancel the tour?

No. Rain by itself doesn't cancel a tour — underwater visibility is barely affected by rain, and snorkeling is still great fun. Your photo and video data is free, so the memories are safe too.

Q. What are the cancellation fees if I cancel?

Cancellations 7–3 days before are 50%, and within 2 days are 100%. If you're unsure because of the weather, please contact us early — we'll help you figure it out.

Q. When should I book to avoid typhoons?

Typhoon paths become clear a few days in advance. Because we accept same-day and last-minute bookings, one smart option is to simply wait for the forecast and book once the weather looks good.
