A rainy day in Uruma, Okinawa
Rain hardly ever cancels an ocean tour here. What cancels one is the swell and the wind. That is why there are bright, sunny days when we still cannot go out — and this is what to do with one.
First: rain does not cancel the tour
Plenty of visitors write the day off as soon as they see rain in the forecast, but rain on its own never cancels a tour. Underwater visibility rarely drops much in cloud or light rain, and the snorkelling is still good.
What we actually watch is the sea. We review conditions at a wave height of 1.5m or a wind speed of 10m/s, and we cancel outright if a high wave warning is issued. So a clear sky can still be a cancelled day, and a wet one can be a perfectly good one.
And the call is made by our captain, on the morning itself, looking at the sea. Honestly, the day before is often too early to know.

Seashell shisa — about an hour, and it goes home with you
There is one thing in Uruma that runs whatever the sea is doing: an indoor workshop where you choose natural seashells and assemble them into your own shisa, the Okinawan guardian lion. It is run by Shisa Art Labo.
Shisa-making in Okinawa usually means pottery — shaping clay and firing it in a kiln. That is a genuine way into a traditional craft and well worth doing. It does, however, need drying and firing time, so the piece is usually collected later or posted on.
A seashell shisa needs no kiln. So it is finished in about an hour and goes home with you the same day — which matters on a tight itinerary, or if you would rather not wait for a parcel.

Book it the day before
Every venue is reservation-only and takes no same-day bookings. Because a boat tour is only called off on the morning itself, you cannot book this after you hear the tour is cancelled. If the forecast looks doubtful, reserve it the evening before.

Worth the drive around Uruma
A day cancelled by swell is often a sunny one, and Uruma's islands are a fine drive.
The Kaichu Doro is a roughly 4km causeway running straight out across the sea, with a rest stop halfway at Ayahashi-kan that works in the rain. Beyond it, on Miyagi Island, Kaho Banta looks down over the water from the cliff edge, and the Nuchimasu salt factory on the same site runs an indoor tour of how the salt is made.
Carry on to Hamahiga Island and you will find the sacred sites of Amamichu and Shirumichu, and a village of red-tiled roofs and stone walls.

What indoor activities are there in Uruma, Okinawa?

Can I book on the day?
No. Every venue is reservation-only and does not accept same-day bookings. raise244. and AJ Resort Island Ikei close bookings at 18:00 the day before; The Moon Beach Museum Resort closes at 23:00 the day before. Because a boat tour is only cancelled on the morning itself, you cannot book the workshop after you hear the tour is off. If the forecast looks doubtful, reserve it the day before.
How many people can join?
Up to 6 people per session. Solo visitors are welcome. Our boat takes up to 9 guests, so a group of 7 or more cannot all join the same workshop session — contact the organiser directly if your group is larger.
How is this different from a pottery shisa class?
You make a different thing. A pottery shisa class shapes clay and fires it in a kiln — a lovely way to touch a traditional Okinawan craft, and well worth doing. A seashell shisa is assembled from natural shells, so nothing needs firing: it is finished in about an hour and goes home with you the same day. That suits a tight itinerary, or anyone who would rather not wait for a shipment.
Can I do the boat tour and the workshop on the same day?
Yes. A morning departure finishes around 13:00, which leaves the 13:30 or 14:45 session at the raise244. venue — the same building as our meeting point. An afternoon departure meets at 13:45, so you can take the 11:00 session first. The 6-hour plan returns around 16:00 and misses the final 14:45 session, so it cannot be combined. All sessions must be booked by 18:00 the day before.
